I have just purchased a Mac and for some legacy software need to run Windows on it.

Ideally I'll run the system in VirtualBox or dual boot it if it's slow.

I need to purchase a version of Windows 7, but I am confused by MAR, OEM etc.

Technically you supposed to be a full retail version of Windows, I would recommend either Windows 7 or Windows 10. Windows 7 is older abut very stable and common. Windows 10 is shaping up to be very good but it is still experiencing growing pains.

As @Moab stated MAR licenses are for Microsoft Authorized Refurbishes, which you don't sound like. An OEM license is for system builders and reseller, which does not sound like what your doing either. So a full retail is what your supposed to get.

All the license version are the same windows they are just marketed and priced differently and the support provided by Microsoft varies as well. OEM and MAR does not get ANY support from Microsoft but if you buy the retail version you can get some general basic support from Microsoft for free.

I used Windows 10 for a month and I didn’t like it.

I use Windows 8.1 since 2014. Because: (I will be using the context of system with 4GB of RAM)

1. My laptop used to boot in 8 seconds on HDD(time taken to show desktop) and now boots up in 5 seconds (on SSD).
2. I can disable every start up application and it works effectively. (Windows 10 run shitload of apps in background and it makes the system slow to use.)
3. Low consumption of RAM. I used to have 15% to 20% RAM used (out of 3.6GB RAM) upon booting (no antivirus) and 23% to 27% RAM used upon booting (with antivirus). Trust me, amount of free RAM matters.
4. Apps’ installation time is faster and execution time is also faster.
5. Control Panel exists as it did on Windows 7. It’s better than the newer settings UI of Windows 10. Old is Gold!
6. Native drivers for devices. WiFi, Ethernet, Camera and USB port drivers come pre-installed on Windows 8.1.
7. Updates, it’s faster to install updates now.
8. Everything has improved over Windows 7. Start menu can be seen as an exception (for most of the users). I personally have set “go to apps when I press windows key” and type the name of the app directly to search and thus run. It’s more faster than my experience with Windows 7.
9. I personally liked the UI and icons as it doesn’t feel cartoony as compared to what I’ve seen on Windows 10.
10. My laptop shuts down completely in 12 seconds.
